The council was formed at the first British University caving club’s seminar, held in Wales on 29th Nov – 1st Dec 2002. The aim of the council is to facilitate communication between the different universities in order to protect University caving and create and exploit opportunities. As the many University club members are spread across the country the Internet and email are the most efficient ways of keeping in touch. In order to do this we have set up an email discussion list and copies of all emails are stored online in our archive. Although the council is mainly a body for communication, it is properly constituted and where necessary, decisions are made by voting. Voting occurs at meetings but is also carried out through the discussion list.
Areas of attention:
- Safety: Working to produce a unified set of safety guidelines, which all clubs can use. This is to protect existing clubs and make starting new ones easier. The guidelines will be approved by the BCA.
- Training: Aim to ensure that all university clubs achieve regular, affordable training that is acceptable to Athletic Unions.
- Expeditions: To aid university clubs in organising expeditions and trips abroad by improving communication and access to relevant information.
- In the future: Fund Raising? Joint projects e.g. digs or conservation? Second hand kit swaps? Anything!!
